  • First knowledge of its existence in 1800 b.c., it was fenced with wall in the 1st century b.c. Its evangelization carne to be in the III century a.c. After a period of decay following barbarian invasion in the XIVth century, the rebirth of the city began with the development of monastic centres, notwithstanding fighting against Perugia. And it was in this century when Assisis most illustri­ous citizien Saint Francis was born. Subjected to the empire, Assisi attemps to rebel, but is conquered by Cristiano, arch bishop of Magonza, ending under the power of Federico Barbarossa. Successively the city finds itself in front of several borders: against the empire, against the papacy, against the neighbouring cities beginning with Perugia. To not talk about intestine and vengeance wars which in the following years have their cui mination in the wars between Fiumi and Nepis. Today they remember it with May­Day which inflames the city on the first days of May. In the XIIIth and XIVth century, the city, ending under the influence of the Church, appears in reestablishment even from the economie side: acquires form and structure which it preserved until today with Franciscan churches, the fartress and the public palaces. Not long after 1300, dark periods return, contradistinguished by wars, inside wars, epidemics, earthquakes and plundering, the most famous whom the one of Piccinino in 1442 which made the city fall ending under the Pontiff dominion. An important turning-point it has after centuries of decay at the beginning of the 800's. In 1818 the mortal remains of Saint Francis are found, and Santa Chiara was recovered in 1850, phenomena which have sensible repercussion on life and economy of the city. The Franciscan anniversary of 1926 and then of 1982 give Assisi further impulse of a tourist and spiritual city, in the name of its most illustrous son, becomes a fundamental point of departure when peace, environment, culture and human rights are mentioned. A more and more perceptible distinguishing mark, which reach its culminating point on the World-Day of prayer for peace, of the 27th october 1986, by Giovanni Paolo IInd in the presence of delegates of the religious of the whole world. Assisi, at present, in the name of S. Francis, is the worlds' capital of peace, an emblematic roll at the threhold of the third millennium, can and must strengthen further the distinguishing mark far peace, far the respect amongst human beings and the nature, substantial lesson for the peoples of the whole world.
