Campello sul Clitunno

From probable, roman origins, it takes its name from the castle erected by Rovero, Baron of Champeaux. In 925, Rovero had a castle e build, in 1341 it was devastated and subjected by Pietro Pianciani from Spoleto. Reconquered by Campello in 1390, staying their dominion until it past to the church. Had been part of the Dukedom of Spoleto, following their vicissitudes.
Agricultural centre in the Umbra valley, placed on the right side of the Maroggia stream. The modern part lays at the foot of the hill. «Campello Alto» lays on a conical hill. Wellknown for its springs of the Clitunno: source of a little river sacred to the homonym God (Juppiter Clitunnus, 5 fluvial divinity) whom a temple was (dedicated, celebrated by Properzio,Silio Italico, Virgilio and Plinio the young, in modern ages painted by) Corot and praised by George Byron and Giosue Carducci.
