Founded by the Etruscans coming from Chiusi with the name «Clusium Novum» on the fourth island of lake Trasimeno. Because of its important position, it was always in controversy with the neighbouring cities. Contested between Toscans and Perugians, the castle was destroyed and rebuild severa I times and finds its definitive state only in the middle of the Xlllth century when Federico II from Svevia had it demolished and rebuild by a military monk-architect, Elia from Cortona, according to a scheme of a centrai fortress in a territorial defensive system. He named it «Castello del Leone» (Lion's castile), which was then transformed in «Castillonen». Notwithstanding numerous siegs, it has never been conquered. The village Castiglione del Lago is completely fenced with wall, makes reference to the number 3:three entrance gates, three roads, three town squares, three are the sides of the donjon and also three churches.
