  • Ancient Etruscan origins, Tiferno becarne Tifernum Tiberis after the roman conquest. Destroyed by the Goths from Totila, it was rebuild and fortified, first with the name Castrum Felicitatis and then Civitas Castelli. Constituted in a free commune of Guelfic tendency in the XIIth century, enjoys a short and difficult autonomy, subjugated at different times, to the roman pontifices, the emperor, to Perugia and Florence, forced to support wars and alliances which often ended to their damage. In the first half of the XIVth century, there had been violent and sanguinary fights between the Guelfic and Ghibelline fractions. Besieged and conquered, it was again troubled by bloody inside fights between several families. In the XIVth and XVth century, Città di Castello was embellished with various solemn buildings and lived an intense artisticial season with the presence of famous siennese painters, having then a prodigious development. Returns definitively to the States of the Church. In 1538 typographical art had been introduced, ,flouring, reaching great fame. Passed to the Italian Kingdom in 1860, Città di Castello suffered mostly the influence of the neighbouring Toscana.
