Gubbio, together with the surrounding region, the Alto Chiascio, is a unique holiday destination. This is because it offers some of the most beautiful and best-preserved old towns in Italy, set in the midst of unspoilt countryside. Many of these little towns can be found in places like the Monte Cucco Regional Park. This is a favourite spot for hang-gliders and is also full of rare wild flowers and animals, as are the Gualdesi Mountains, with their splendid meadows and nature trails.
The region also offers visitors high-quality hotels and holiday farms scattered throughout the area, together with architectural and artistic treasures. It is an area that is proud of its centuries-old folk traditions, and here you can appreciate unique events and artefacts, like the “Festa dei Ceri” held annually in Gubbio on May 15th, and the “Tavole Eugubine”, the oldest evidence of Umbrian civilisation on show in the Palazzo dei Consoli in Gubbio. There are Franciscan monuments throughout the Chiascio River Valley, together with the Church of the Vittorina, where Saint Francis met and tamed the Wolf. Gubbio is home to the tallest Christmas tree in the world, which is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records, and there is much, much more, making this area of Umbria the perfect destination for a high-quality and unique holiday.
The region’s numerous restaurants and hotels offer something for everyone, from the most luxurious to the most budget-conscious accommodation and dining experiences, all providing warm, friendly hospitality that is typical of the people of this area.
Local handicrafts also abound, with gorgeous, high-quality ceramics and wrought-iron work, along with wood restoration, book binding and hand-loom workshops, which further add to the area’s cultural riches and charms. Extraordinarily rich in historical buildings, this region with its harmonious unity is in itself a testimony to the past.
To truly appreciate this fascinating place in all its beauty, it is best visited at a leisurely pace, using alternative means of transportation, by bicycle, on horseback or on foot.
